Headline: Badgers get FIRST Big Ten Victory Game MVP: Jim Sorgi--- back-up quarter back tosses game winning touchdown pass Offensive Player of the Game: Lee Evans-- Game winning touchdown catch
The Badgers entered Saturday's game in East Lansing against the Spartans in desperate need of a victory to save the season. For the first quarter, it appeared the Badgers would go down to defeat for a fourth straight week and say goodbye to any post-season bowl hopes. But....they rallied to tie the score at 10-10 at half. Battled through a rough third quarter, and most of the fourth, but in the end, they found a way to win 17-10.
The Spartans scored first on a 31 yard field goal which they were forced to kick after the Badger defense sacked quarterback Van Dyke. The Spartans extended the lead with just 11 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, as Van Dyke connected on a long pass to Herb Haygood who eluded Badger defender B.J.Tucker and aced into the endzone for the touchdown. Following the extra point, the Spartans were flying high with a 10-0 lead after just fifteen minutes.
The Badgers would control both sides of the ball for the second quarter, similar to how Michigan State did in the first. Bollinger capped off the first scoring drive of ten plays--- 80 yards when he ran it in from the one.
Bollinger aided his cause and the team, when he avoided a sack and ran away under heavy pressure picking up 45 yards before he was tackled. the Badger defense continued to shut down the Spartans, including a big interception by Mike Echols which enabled Bollinger and the offense to continue their work. The Badgers would tie the score at 10-10 by the end of the half on a 38 yard field goal by Pisetsky.
The third quarter was primarily a battle of field position, but neither team was able to find a way to score. The quarter also saw the emergence of Jim Sorgi at quarterback for the Badgers, who had to replace Bollinger after he suffered a concussion. Sorgi actually did fairly well as he completed his first four passes.
Despite the fact the Badgers made several mistakes every time it appeared they were poised to score, they found a way to win in the end. With just 45 seconds left and still tied at 10...... the Badgers were facing a fourth and one at the 46. Following a team time-out, they went for it. Michael Bennett took the hand-off and dove over the line for a two yard gain and a first down. On the next play..... Sorgi went to pass, and threw a 45 yard touchdown pass to Lee Evans!!! Pisetsky added the extra point for a 17-10 VICTORY.
With the victory the Badgers are now 4-3 overall and 1-3 in the Big Ten.
