Game MVP: Matt Schebert Offensive Player of the Game: Booker Stanley
The Ohio State Buckeyes came into soggy and wet Camp Randall Stadium on Saturday night with a 19 game winning streak. At the end of the night, the defending national champions left with a 1 game losing streak following Wisconsin's 17-10 victory!
The Badgers led the entire game, and never trailed the Buckeyes. At one point, Ohio State tied the game at 10-10 and looked to have the momentum to pull off victory #20 in a row. But.... a 79 yard touchdown pass late in the fourth quarter from backup quarterback Matt Schubert to Lee Evans broke the tie and gave the Badgers a remarkble 17-10 victory.
Neither team scored in the opening quarter. But Wisconsin opened the scoring on the first play of the second quarter, on a drive that carried over from the first. On third and goal at the 3, Booker Stanley swept to the left behind his blockers and scored the touchdown. Allen added the extra poit for a 7-0 lead. The blowing rain prevented both teams from establishing a dominating game. Ohio State looked poised to tie the game before the first half ended, as their offense took over in great position at the 19, after Jim Leonard would muffled a punt catch. Krenzel had the Buckeyes on a role. However, the drive stalled near the goal line, and the Buckeyes settled for a 25 yard field goal making the score 7-3.
The wet weather continued to control the game from both teams in the third quarter, forcing each to punt. Following a Wisconsin punt about midway though the third, which was fumbled at the 35 by Chris Gamble, the Badgers recovered. Sorgi tried, but the OSU defense came up and stopped the Badgers, forcing Wisconsin to settle for a 38 yard field goal with 5:09 remaining to extend the lead to 10-3.
Ohio State battled back to tie the game in the fourth. The Buckeyes drove 76 yards in 7 plays for the score. Highlighted by a 46 yard pass from Krenzl to Drew Carter, which gave OSU a first and goal at the 6. Two plays later, Krenzel passed to Mike Jenkins for the touchdown and a 10-10 tie with just over six minutes remaining.
On the Badgers next drive, they were forced to use backup quarter back Matt Schubert, because Sorgi was on the bench, injured in the neck on a dirty play by Robert Reynolds who suffed his hand into Sorgi's throat and pressed on it. But Schabert got the job done to perfection. After Stanley gained 1 yard to make it second and 9 at the 21. Schabert then thew a 79 pass to the grasping arms of Lee Evans for the touchdown. Allen added the extra point for a 17-10 lead. Ohio State had a few more chances, but ran out of time outs, and forced the ball back to Wisconsin. The Badgers were able to run, run, run the football from that point, and all Ohio State could do was watch the final seconds tick away and watch their 19 game winning streak fly away.
Wiscosin now 6-1 overall
3-0 Big Ten
