Roy Boone hit his first three attempts from three point range to get the Badgers off to a fast 9-2 start on Saturday, and finished with 18 points as the Badgers defeated the Marquette Golden Eagles 52-47.
The 107th meeting between the schools at the Bradley Center was far from a sell-out. Following Boone's fast start for a 9-2 lead, the Badgers welcomed back Maurice Linton from suspension, as he nailed a three pointer to make it 12-6. Boone would continue his hot pace and total 11 of the Badger's first 16 points, as Wisconsin would build a 10 point lead at 18-8 with 7:48 remaining in the first half. After extending the lead to 20-8 and looking poised to blow Marquette out of the building, the Badgers went cold and made costly turnovers, which allowed Marquette to go on a 8-0 run to draw close at 20-16. Mark Vershaw eventually stopped the bleeding and hit for two to make it 22-16 with 1:50 remaining. That seemed to help, as Wisconsin closed out the half on a 6-3 run to lead 26-19 at halftime.
The second half started sloppy for both teams, yet the Badgers managed to extend the lead out to nine at 32-21.Henry would revive the Golden Eagles with a burst of five straight to make it 33-26 with just under twelve minutes remaining. The Badgers would charge back and extend the lead to as many as 9 points at 37-28 with 7:46 remaining. Marquette kept it close drawing to within 7 at 37-30, eventually out scoring Wisconsin 10-8 to get within five at 45-40 with 2:13 left in the game. The Eagles then had it down to three at 45-42 at the two minute mark. From there the Badger defense toughened and Marquette found it hard to make shots. Boone pulled down a huge rebound on the defensive boards, and the Badgers made good on freethrows to escape with the 52-47 victory.
The victory improved the Badgers to 8-1 on the season. it also gave the Badgers a sweep of the Division 1 schools in the state, after they beat UW-Milwaukee and UW-Green Bay earlier this year.
