Offensive Player of the Game: Matt Bernstein= 27 carries- 123 yards
Defensive Player of the Game: Erasmus James= 5 tackles-2 sacks- 1 fumble recovery

The old saying in football is DEFENSE wins championships. If that is indeed true, than after Saturday's performance which saw the Badgers defeat Penn State 16-3, Wisconsin should win the Big TEN Championship in 2004. While the offense has struggled to put up points in the first games, the defense has been proven a winner.

In Saturday's conference opener against Penn State, The Badger defense forced three turnovers, and saw them knock-out of the game quarterback Michael Robinson with a concussion.

The Badger defense went to work on the game's initial drive for Penn State. Brett Bell intercepted a pass. But the offense was unable to capitalize. However.... the defense came up with another big play on the next series. Penn State fumbled and Erasmus James recovered for the Badgers at the 45. The offense found a way to move the ball and find the endzone. The drive appeared headed for a field goal on third and 12 from the 32. Stocco then passed to Brandon Williams for a gain of 17 and a first down. Three plays later on third and one from the five, Stocco ran a bootleg and scored the TOUCHDOWN. Allen added the p.a.t. to give Wisconsin a 7-0 lead with just under two minutes remaining in the opening quarter.

The Badgers extended the lead in the second quarter. On the third play of the drive, Stocco passed to Brandon White for a gain of 16 yards. A few plays later on third and 2, Bernstein kept the drive alive by gaining 3. Stocco eventually worked the offense down to the 18. He was then sacked for a loss, and then ran for no-gain while scrambling. Allen came on and kicked a 38 yard field goal to extend the lead to 10-0 with 5:18 remaining in the first half. The next Penn State drive, saw the Badger defense with another key play. On third and 12, Jim Leonard INTERCEPTED a pass at mid-field and returned it back down to the 25. However..... the offense was unable to move the ball, so Allen came in and kicked a 39 yard field goal to give the Badgers a 13-0 lead as the first half closed out.

In the third quarter, Wisconsin came out and used a dominating, time consuming drive of 17 plays-73 yards-7:59.It was a ground controlled drive, which saw Matt Bernstein take control with powerful runs of 7-6-7-12 and 6 yards. In the end, the offense stalled and Allen kicked a 25 yard field goal to make the score 16-0.

Penn State came back on their next possession and scored their only points of the day, a 23 yard field goal by Rob Gould with 2:15 left making it 16-3.

Neither team scored in the fourth quarter allowing a Camp Randall Stadium RECORD crowd of 82,179 see the Badgers beat Penn State 16-3.

With the victory Wisconsin is now 4-0 Overall 1-0 Big Ten
