Headline: Penn State Hands Badgers First Loss of Season
Penn State came to Madison after losing their conference opener last week to Iowa, while Wisconsin has the week off to prepare. Unfortunatly, they didn't prepare enough, epsecially on defense, as Penn State racked up 436 yards of offense on route to a 34-31 victory.
Penn State took he opening kick and marched it down field into scoring position. The drive looked to be over, when Zack Mills threw an incomplete pass on third and eight at the 38, but Alex Lewis of the Badger's was called for off-sides. Then Mills completed a pass to convert the first down. Eventually the drive stalled but Robbie Gould came in and kicked a 33 yard filed goal to make the early score 3-0.
The Badgers first drive of the day saw Bollinger get sacked for a ten yard loss, and then despite completing a pass on the next play to Johnathon Orr winding just short of the first down,they ended up punting. Penn State regained control at the 20. Mills immeadiatly completed a pass for 15 yards to Tony Johnson. On the next play, Mills assed to Larry Johnson for a gain of 7. After moving out to midfield, Penn State lost some yardage and was later faced with a third and 19. Mills passed to Gerold Smith for a gain of 22 to give Penn State new life. On first down at the 37, Mills passed to Brian Johnson for a gain of 22. Next from the 12, Mills hit Larry Johnson for a gain of 11, giving Penn State a first and goal. On second and goal, Paul Jefferson fumbled the ball at the goal line, but Mills scooped it up and dived into the endzone for the touchdown. Gould added the p.a.t. and Penn State led 10-0 with just under four minutes remaining. The Badgers would put a halt to any ideas Penn State had about a blow-out, as they went to work for their first score late in the first quarter and into the early second quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, Bollinger hit Orr for a gain of 14. The Badgers eventually worked it out to midfield. On thirdand 5, Bollinger passed to Brandon Williams, who ran for a 29 yard gain down to the 14. Next Davis gained 9, down to the five. On second and one from the five, Bollinger ran an option to the left and scored the touchdown. Campbell licked the extra point for a 10-7 score. Penn State came right back on the next drive and scored a field goal in a 12 play drive, which saw Mills pick up a few first downs. When the drive stalled at the 25, Gould came in and kicked a 42 yard field goal to make it 13-7. The next drive for Wisconsin was three plays and a punt. Penn State regained control at the 46. On third and six, Mills passed to Casey Williams for a gain of 17. A few plays on third and 7 from the 46, Mills was rushed by the Badger defense and threw an errant pass, which B.J. Tucker intercepted and then ran 65 yards for the touchdown. Campbell kicked the extra point and Wisconsin had a 14-13 lead. Penn State once again on their next drive, attacked the Badger defense for a score. On first down at the 25, Mills completed a deep pass good for 38 yards to Bryant Tucker down to the 25. Next play, on first down, Larry Johnson burst threw the line and broke two tackles and cruised into the endzone for the score. Electing to go for two on the conversion, Mills passed to Larry Johnson for the completion and a 21-14 Penn State lead as the first half neared its end.
The Badgers started the second half with the ball, but produced nothing after just three plays and punted. Mills went to work, and found Bryant Johnson for a gain of 43 yards down to the 13. On third and goal at the 1, Sean McHugh scored the touchdown and with the extra point.Penn State extended their lead to 28-14. The Badgers answered on their next drive, going 80 yards in 13 plays in 6:30. On the drive Bollinger converted two straight thirddown coversions. The Badgers eventually scored the touchdown courtesy of a Penn State penalty giving them a first and goal. On third, Bollinger passed to Brandon Williams for the score. However, tackle Ben Johnson was penalized for a late hit, forcing Wisconsin to kick a 28 yard extra point. Campbell missed it, and it was 28-20. The Badger defense finally found a way to stop Penn State, and forced them to punt for the first time of the day.The Badgers took over at the 38. Duane Smith gained 15 yards, and then Bollinger hit Smith for a gain of 10 yards as the third quarter closed.
On the first play of the fourth quarter, Smith gained 18 yards. The drive eventually stalled out, and Wisconsin settled for a 48 yard field goal from Mike Allen to make it 28-23 with 13;02 remaining. The teams traded punts on each of their next series. Then Penn State took over at the 26. Mills completed passes for gains of 16 and 12 yards. A penalty on Penn State stalled out their drive, but not their scoring as Gould came in and booted a 51 yard field goal to extend the lead to 31-23. on the Badger's next series, Bollinger was intercepted by Gino Caponne and it eventually led to another field goal by Gould fro 40 yards, which put Penn State in the drivers seat for the victory at 34-23 with just 2:57 remaining.Wisconsin stormed back on the next drive which started at the 35. Bollinger was sacked to slow tjings down a bit, but eventually completed passes to Charles for 20 and Smith for 12. On second and 16 from the 29, Bollinger passed to Johnathan Orr in the back of the endzone for the touchdown with just 1:15 remaining. Going for two on the conversion proved successful, as Duane Smith ran in from the left side to make it 34-31.
On the kick-off, the on-sides attempt was poorly kicked. Penn State recovered at the 45. From there Mills simply took the snap and a knee for three plays to end the game and give Penn State the victory by the FINAL SCORE:
