This was supposed to be the day that the Badgers would win their second straight game, and take a step up in the standings. Instead, it was day which saw Drew Brees of Purdue get a victory over Wisconsin for the first time in his three years as a quarterback, a day in which he also became the careeer yards passing leader in the Big Ten, and a day where his defense would win the game on a blocked field goal attempt in overtime 30-24.
Purdue won the coin toss and deferred to the second half. The Badgers went on offense first. Jim Sorgi started his first college game in place of Brooks Bolinger who was not fully cleared to play by doctors following his concussion last week.Sorgi satrted out strong completing two passes, unfortunatly the drive ended as he was sacked on a third down play. On the Boilermakers first possession of the day, Drew Brees started out strong as well, as he completed his first pass, but after that the Badger defense buckled down, and forced Purdue to punt. Basically thats the way the first quarter played out on both sides, each team would move the ball well, but ended up punting. The Badgers would get the ball late in the first quarter, and extend the game's first score into the early second quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter, Sorgi lofted a pass down field to Chris Chambers who leaped up over a Purdue defender in the endzone to catch t for the touchdown. Pisetsky kicked the extra point and it was 7-0 The lead would not last very long, as Purdue came right back down the field in an impresive 12 play--77 yard drive. Several times on the drive, Brees showed why he is so good, as he converted on third down plays. On a third and one, Brees gained two.The big third down conversion came later, as Purdue had a third and 15 at the 30. Brees threw a pass to A.T. Simpson, who caught it behind the Badger defenders and scored the touchdown.
But the Badgers showed some spunk as they came right back at Purdue on the next drive. Sorgi completed passes of 11 and 32 yards to Chambers, the 32 yard pass from Sorgi saw Chambers advance down the sideline for the gain. A few plays later Michael Bennett ignited the crowd as he found a hole and raced 33 yards for the touchdown. Following the p.a.t. the Badgers regained the lead at 14-7. Purdue's offense would stall-out as would the Badger's for the remainder of the quarter, and the Badgers took the 14-7 advantage into the lockerroom at halftime.
Purdue came out STRONG at the start of the third quarter.
Behind the leaderhip of Brees, who put a massive block on Jason Doering to allow his running back gain 40 yards, the Boilermakers went 60 yards in ten plays, as Brees capped off the drive running in for the score from the six yard line to tie the game at 14-14. Later in the quarter, the Badgers would take the lead back at 17-14, as Pisetsky booted a 35 yard filed goal. The drive almost ended when Wisconsin was faced with a fourth and one at the 31.Alvarez took a time-out. After electing to go for it, the play saw Sorgi plunge forwardfor the first down.
A few plays later Bennet gained 21 yards, next Chambers caught a pass for a 23 yard gain, but that was all, as the drive stalled and Pisetsky kicked the field goal. That lead would not long at all, as Brees brought the Boilermakers back FAST...... 2 plays---80 yards.... the big play..... an 80 yard touchdown strike to Seth Morales which gave Purdue the lead back at 21-17. Similar o the late second quarter, the third quarter ended with both teams sputtering out on offense.
Early in the fourth quarter.... the Badger offense got rolling as Chambers caught two passes for gains, but o the second pass, he tried too hard to gain extar yardage, and fumbled over to Purdue. Thre Badger defense stepped up on the next series as they forced Purdue into a three and out series. The two teams traded punts for their possssions, eventually Purdeu extende the lead half way thru the final quarter on a 44 yard field goal to make it 24-17. the Badgers would not give up...... on the kick-off Nick Davis fielded the kick at the goal line, and returned it out to the 38. Bennett had tow nice gains to get the Badgers out to the 45, next Sorgi hit Chambers for a 24 yard gain, which Chambers just missed breaKing for the score. The Badgers worked the ball down to the five and were faced with a fourth and one..... following a time-out..... Sorgi took the snap and rolled right, he found John Sigmund in the corner of the endzone for the touchdown. With just under four minutes left, thengame was tied at 24-24. Each team had a chance to win the game on exchange of possessions down the stretch, but were unable to do anything.Brees and Purdue had the last shot, but Brees came up short and the game went to over-time.
Purdue won the coin toss for the over time, and elected to take defense first. The Badgers offense came out.On first down at the 25...Bennett was stopped for no gain. After a false start penalty on the Badgers made it second and 15.... Sorgi pass was incomplete. On third down at the 30.....Sorgi was SACKED.The Badgers elected to have Pisetsky kick a 58 yard field goal. The sanp was high.... and Craig Terrill BLOCKED the kick....then Ashante Woods scooped it up and raced down field 38 yards for the winning touchdown.
FINAL SCORE; PURDUE 30
