Once again on Saturday in West Lafayette the Wisconsin Badgers rode the DAYNE train to victory, 28-21 over the Purdue Boilermakers.
Purdue had two chances in the first quarter to take a lead on the Badgers with attempted field goals. But they were unable to cash in. The first kick from 42 yards was wide left, and the second attempt from 37 yards was BLOCKED by Jamar Fletcher. Unfortunatly...... the Badger offense was slow moving also and the teams remained scoreless after one quarter.
The Badgers would score first on the day, early in the second quarter. Bollinger capped off an 8 play-- 37 yard drive on third and goal at the three. Bollinger rolled out to the left and passed to Dague Retzlaff in the endzone for the TOUCHDOWN. During the course of the drive, Bollinger threw a pass for a gain of twenty to Chambers, and then Purdue was called for offsides, which gave the Badgers a first and goal at the five.
The lead for the Badgers didn't last long however, as Purdue came right back. On their first play, Vinnie Sutherland gained 23 yards on an end around. Drew Brees then hit several receivers with passes for gains. Purdue got down to the 2, and on third down got a big break, when Joey Boese was penalized for pass interference. Two plays later, Brees JUMPED over a pile of players for the touchdown. The p.a.t. was good and the game was tied at 7-7.
The tie score lasted for about thirty seconds. On the kick-off, Nick Davis received and proceeded to run it back 90 yards for the TOUCHDOWN. Pisetsky kicked the extra point and the Badgers led again 14-7. Purdue came storming back. Brees again led them on a long drive, that finally stalled. Travis Dorsch came on to atempt a 38 yard field goal....... and he MISSED it to the left.
On the Badgers next drive..... Ron Dayne put another notch behind his name in the NCAA record book,as he PASSED Tony Dorsett to become the number TWO leading rusher in NCAA history. The Badgers had Pisetsky attempt a 54 yard field goal as time expired and it was short.
The Badgers went to the locker room leading 14-7 at the half.
Purdue started the third quarter with a non-productive drive and punted. The Badgers took over deep in their territory at the 11. On fourth and two from the 34, they elected to go for the first down. Dayne was stopped for no gain,so Purdue took over. Drew Brees again threw for big gains. He found Tim Stratton for gains of 22 and 10 yards. And then the big pass to Stratton. On first down at the 12--- Brees passed to Stratton for the score. After the p.a.t. the game was tied ain at 14-14.
Neither team produced any action in their next series, so the game remained tied at 14-14 after three quarters.
Early in the fourth..... Purdue was threating to score. Brees attemped a pass on third and six at the thirty, and he was INTERCEPTED by Bobby Meyers in the endzone.
The Badgers regained the lead on this possession. On third and ten at the twenty..... Bollinger passed to Chambers for a gain of 16. Next Bollinger passed to Demetrius Brown for a gain of 11, ou to the 47.
Two plays later, DAYNE got the ball and ran 41 yards for the TOUCHDOWN.
The teams traded punts on their next possessions. Purdue got the ball back following a Badger punt at the 12 with 5:15 remaining. On first down Brees passes to Stratton for a gain of 15. Next on first down at the 27...... Brees passes to Chris Daniels, who bobbled the pass, Jamar Fletcher picked it off and raced 35 yards for the TOUCHDOWN. Pisetsky kicked the extra point, and the Badgers were in control at 28-14.
But....... Drew Brees was not through. He came back out and drove the Boilermakers promptly down the field into scoring range. The drive was kept alive when Chris Collegi was penalized for roughing the quarterback on a fourth and goal from the three. One play later, Brees scored the touchdown.
Trailing 28-21 with less tahntwo remaining and 1 time-out Purdue had to try an on-sides kick. The kick was a big hopper that fortunatly bounced into the hands of Demetrius Brown. The Badgers were then able to run out the clock and run away with a 28-21 VICTORY !!!!!!!!
