Badger Hockey Eliminated From NCAA Tournament

A thrilling season highlighted by a 12 game unbeaten streak came to an end Saturday night as Wisconsin lost to the the top ranked Maine Black Bears 2-1 in over-time.

Less then twenty four hours earlier, Wisconsin defeated Ohio State in over-time to reach the regional final. Maine attacked the puck and scored early in the game. Collin Shields took the loose puck and led a break down ice, several Badger defenders tried to recover and check Shields and the puck, Shields stayed aggressive and fired a hard slap shot( the first shot on goal for the night) and it beat UW goalie Bernd Bruckler for the score and an early 1-0 lead.

The Badgers would battle back and tie the game at 1-1 late in the second period on a goal by Rene Bourque. Neither team was able to score in the third period, which set up the over-time.

Maine's Mike Hamilton scored the game winning goal at the 3:27 mark. Hamilton faked the initial shot, then slid in and swept the puck into the net under Bruckler. The game officials called for a time-out to review the play. After two minutes of deliberations, the officials ruled that the puck did cross the goal line and counted, which then allowed Maine to celebrate a birth in next weekend's Frozen Four.

With the loss, Wisconsin ended their season with a record of 22-13-8.
