Headline: Badger Hockey WINS Showdown Championship
After a three year hiatus, the Pettit Cup is returning to Madison, as Jeff Sauer and his hockey Badgers won the 2000 edition of the Bank One Badger Hockey Showdown with a thrilling 3-2 victory Saturday night at the Bradley Center over Boston College.
On Friday night in the semi-final, Wisconsin opened the game with a 5-0 lead after the first period. The Princeton Tigers stormed back in periods two and three scoring three unanswered goals to make it close at 5-3. The Tigers elected to pull their goalie with over 1 minute to play, to draw even, but Kevin Granato's empty netter with 20 seconds left, gave the Badgers the 6-3 victory.
In the early game Friday night, Boston and North Dakota ha a real duel. North Dakota led 3-2 late in the third period, before Boston eventually tied it, and won the game with a goal with only 18 seconds remaining at 4-3.
In Saturday's Championship game between the Badgers and Boston, the team skated through a scoreless first period. The Badgers scored three goals in the second period to lead 3-0. Andy Wheeler had two of the three goals. Boston stormed back late in the third with two goals to make it 3-2 with just 2:15 remaining.The period was very rough.It saw several fights, and a total of ten penalties issued. But like Friday night, big saves by Melanson and good defense allowed the Badgers to hang on for the 3-2 victory and the championship.
The championship is the seventh overall for the Badgers in the twelve year history of the event.
