Headline: Badgers Survive a Scare from UW-Milwaukee Game MVP: Roy Boone--15 points
Despite the fact that the Badgers only made three field goals in the entire second half, and led by only one point with just over three minutes remaining, they found a way to out muscle their younger relative from Milwaukee, and pull out a 55-47 victory on Saturday night at the Kohl Center.
The Badgers led for the entire first half, taking a 17-8 lead, before Jones hit a three pointer for UWM to make it 17-11. The Badger defense forced UWM into a shot clock violation. Penney came back and hit a three pointer for the Badgers to give the Badgers their biggest lead of the game at 22-11 with just over 8 minutes remaining in the half. Vershaw would later score a basket to cap off a 7-0 Wisconsin run to make it 24-11. But UWM stormed back strong before the end of the half. Jason Frederick scored for three to pull the Panthers to within 10 points at 24-14 at the six minute mark. Lettenberger found himself open for the Panthers behind the three point arch and hit, to make the score 27-19. But.... Ricky Bower answered right back with a three point shot of his own, to give the Badgers a 30-19 lead with 2:36 remaining. UWM would close out the half on a 6-0 run courtesy of three pointers from Jason Frederick and Clay Tucker to make it 30-25 at HALFTIME.
The Panrhers came out strong in the second half, scoring the first five points to tie the game at 30-30 with 13:25 remaining. The Panther defense held Wisconsin scoreless for the first seven minutes of the second half. Boone finally boke the drought for the Badgers by nailing a three point shot to make it 33-30. The Panthers fought back and tied the game at 34-34 at the nine minute mark. The Badgers would then explode onto an 8-2 run to regain control at 42-36 with six minutes remaining. Weiss would nail a three point shot at the shot clock buzzer, and moments later Tucker again hit for three to get UWM within 2 at 44-42 with 4:15 remaining. Tucker would burn the Badgers again to make it 45-44 with just three minutes remaining. Down the stretch, Mark Vershaw provided the power the Badgers needed both defensive on rebounds, and on offense hitting a key shot inside the paint at the 1:33 mark to give the Badgers a five point advantage at 49-44. From there, it was an exchange of trips to the charity line, and the Badgers held on for the 55-47 win.
The Badgers are now 7-1 on the season. They have won SEVEN STRAIGHT, after losing the season opener. They are also 5-0 under interim head coach Brad Soderberg.
