Headline: Sauer's Career and Badger Hockey Season Ends
The Wisconsn Badger Hockey team wenr into the post-season knowing full well that each time they took to the ice, cold be the last time for head coach Jeff Sauer. On Thursday night, after 31 years as a head coach, and twenty as the Badger's, his career finally ended. The Badgers lost in overtime in the opening game of the WCHA Final Five tournament to Colorado College 3-2. Ironically, it was Colorado College with which his playing career began back in 1961. The loss ended any hopes the Badgers had of getting a bid to the NCAA tournament. They knew going into the weekend, that they would have to win the tournament to get the automatic bid into the tournament.
Colorado College took a 1-0 lead late in the first period. Wisconsin would come back and tie the game at 1-1 in the second. Colorado College regained the lead at 2-1 with a goal with about five minutes remaining in the third period. The Badgers forced the overtime with a goal with just ninty seconds remaining. Unfortunatly... Wisconsin's season and Jeff Sauer's career ended when just 55 seconds into the extra session, when Peter Senja popped in the game winning goal, giving Colorado College a 3-2 victory.
