Headline: Badgers Place Third in Annual Hockey Showdown
Jeff Sauer and his Badgers entered the 2001 version of the Bank One Badger Hockey Showdown, with sincere hopes and high aspirations, of winning back to back Showdown titles for the first time since they accomplished that feat at the 1993/ 1994 Showdowns. In the twelve year history of the tournament, Wisconsin had won a total of seven titles. Unfortunatly...... someone forgot to mention this item to the Brown University Bears, who entered the tournament with a lowly record of 3-5-1.
On Thursday night, Brown took a 1-0 lead in the first period as Adam Saunders scored a power play goal at 11:07 of the first period. The score would stay at 1-0 until early in the third period, when the Badgers would tie the game at 1-1 at the 2:32 mark on a power play goal by Matt Hussey. The battle continued, and it appeared that Brown had more momentum as they sensed they could pull off the upset victory. The Badger defense was weak in the later part of the third period, as they the Bears several good shots on goal. Finally at the 17:36 mark Les Hagget picked up a shot off the rebound, and brushed it home for the game winning goal. Wisconsin managed to wina face-off draw late with just about a 1:30 remaining, and were able to pull goaltender Mark Baranczyk, but it didn't help as Brown withstood the pressure, and held on for the 2-1 victory.
In the first semi-final game on Thursday..... New Hampshire and Colorado College skated to a 2-2 game after two periods. In the third, New Hampshire exploded for four goals to win 6-2.
On Friday evening, the Badgers took the ice for the 5pm consolation game against WCHA rival Colorado College. It was a fantastic game to watch, as the teams skated to a 3-3 tie through regulation; a five minute overtime; a five to five shootout;and finally a sudden death shootout. Wisconsin looked like they would run away from the Tigers, as Matt Hussey scored twice to give them a 2-0 lead after one period. Colorado College would narrow the gap to 2-1 in the second as Richard Petiot would score early at the 1:31 mark. Very early in the third period, at the :11 mark, Mark Cullen would score and tie the game at 2-2. Rene Borque would give the advantage back to Wisconsin, as he would score at 8:00 to give the Badgers a 3-2. Unfortunatly.... Wisconsin could not hold the lead, and Peter Senja would tie it at 3-3 at 15:49.
Neither team would score for the final four minutes, nor would they during the five minute overtime. In the five shot shootout, both teams would manage just one goal. After three attempts each, it was still scoreless. Alex Kim would score for Colorado College on their fourth attempt. A few moments later, Wisconsin came down to their fifth and final shot, needing to score to stay alive. Dan Boeser shot and scored!!! In the sudden death, Colorado College failed on their first attempt. Rene Bourque skated in and shot the puck low to the left side and it went in to give the Badgers the VICTORY.
In the 2001 Bank One Badger Hockey Showdown Championship game, played later that night, New Hampshire routed the Brown Bears 11-3.
