Badgers Upset Mighty Michigan-Improve to 4-0

Game MVP: John Stocco= Game winning TD with 24 seconds remaining
Offensive Player of the Game: Brian Calhoun - 36 carries- 155 yards- 1 TD

It was the last chance Barry Alvarez would have to post a victory against Michigan. Saturday night before a sold-out Camp Randall stadium and a national tv audience, his Badgers did not disappointment him as they posted a thrilling 23-20 victory to improve to 4-0 overall and 1-0 in the Big Ten.

FIRST QUARTER:

Both teams challenged each other, but like a heavy weight fight, neither side scored any crucial points in the opening round.

SECOND QUARTER:

Michigan opened the scoring on their second series of the quarter following an exchange of punts. Henne connected on several key passes to keep the drive moving including completions of 34 to Manningham and a 27 yard gain to Avent which gave the Wolverines a first down at the 35. Initially the kick was no-good from 49 yards, but following a roughing the kicker penalty on the Badgers, Garrett Rivas tried again from 44 yards and made it giving Michigan a 3-0 lead. The Wolverines would extend the lead to 10-0 later in the quarter. Henne connected with Avant for a 28 yard gain to the 43 on the second play of the drive. Later Henne found Grady open for a 19 yard gain. The Wolverines worked it down to the five for a first and goal. On third down, Henne threw to Avant for the touchdown and the 10-0 lead with 4:30 remaining.

The Badgers would storm back and get their first points of the night on the next drive. Stocco threw several key passes for gains. On first down, he threw to Daniels for a gain of 20. Later on a third and ten,Stocco passes to Johnathan Orr for 12 yards down to the 38. Eventually Mehlaff came in and booted a 35 yard field goal to make it 10-3 with 1:17 remaining in the half.

The Badger defense was unable to stop Michigan. Henne threw for a 30 yard completion to Mario Manning down to the six. With four seconds remaining, Rivas kicked a field goal from 28 yards to give Michigan a 13-3 lead at half.

THIRD QUARTER:

The Badgers stopped the Wolverines opening second half drive, and began their comeback at the 37. Calhoun ran two straight times for gains of 8 and 10 yards. Daniels would catch a pass for a gain of 12. Eventually the drive stalled and Mahlaff converted from 42 yards outto make it a 13-6 game with nine minutes left in the quarter.
The two teams traded punts and field position the remainder of the quarter.

FOURTH QUARTER:

The Badgers got rolling in the fourth with a long 15 play drive that resulted in Mehlaff's third field goal of the night. Stocco hit Daniels for a gain of 11 on third and ten to keep the drive going. A few plays later, Calhoun ran for 11 down to the 7 for a first and goal. Three plays later, Mehlaff connected from 27 yards to cut the deficit to 13-9.

Michigan FUMBLED on their next drive, Mark Zielweski recovered at the 35. Michigan was penalized for a personal foul which gave the Badgers the ball down at the 12. Two plays later, Calhoun dove over the pylon in the left corner of the endzone for the TOUCHDOWN. Mehlaff added the p.a.t. and Wisconsin led 16-13 with 11:35 remaining in the game.

The teams then traded field position with INTERCEPTIONS, although Michigan was able to capitlize better. Henne handed off to Kevin Grady, who pitched it back to Henne, Henne then lofted a perfect pass of 49 yards to Manningham for the touchdown. Rivas added the p.a.t and Michigan was back out in front 20-16 with just overnine minutes remaining.

The Badgers would later get their final opportunity with 4:35 remaining. This time, Stocco and Calhoun led the charge. On a third and one from the 33, Calhoun gained 9 to give the Badgers a fresh set of downs. The Badgers eventually got down to the four for a first and goal. After two passes into the endzone failed, Wisconsin as faced with a third and goal. Stocco took the snap and burst right up the middle on a draw play for a TOUCHDOWN with only 24 seconds remaining. Mehlaff added the extra point.

The Wolverines had one gasp of life left. But it failed as Henned slipped on the turf as he attempted to roll-out for a hail Mary pass with just 1 second. The Badgers and their fans celebrated a VICTORY with a FINAL SCORE
