Headline: Badgers WIN an OVERTIME thriller from Bearcats Game MVP: Eddie Faulkner--16 yard game winning touch down in over time
The Cinncinnati Bearcats almost destroyed the Wisconsin Badger's season again on Saturday. Trailing late in the game 19-15, the Badgers had to rally to take a 22-19 lead on a one yard plunge for a score by Brooks Bollinger with 23 seconds left. The Badgers would see the Bearcats tie the game at 22 with a 47 yard field goal as time expired sending the game into over time. In the overtime, the Bear cats took a 25-22 lead on a 20 yard field goal. It was then that Faulkner saved the day by winning the game in just two plays, he gained nine yards o the first carry, and then ended the game with a 16 yard TOUCHDOWN run on the second.
In the FIRST quarter...... the Badger defense sent an early strong message to the Bearcats, as they stuffed them in three plays. Josh Hunt returned the punt 21 yards to give the Badgers a first down at the 32.Bollinger wasted little time, as the Badgers would score in just four plays capped off with an 8 yard run by Bollinger. Pisetsky kicked the extra point to make it 7-0 Wisconsin.
The Bearcats would answer that score on their next possession. Deontey Kenner gained a first down rushing on the first play, then hit Antonio Chatman for a six yard gain. Kenner would covert pass completions of 11 and 15 yards a few plays later to get the Bearcats down to the 26. The Badger defense tightened up, and stalled the drive, forcing the Bearcats to settle for a Johnathan Ruffin 36 yard field goal to make the score 7-3 with a little over 8 minutes remaining. On the next series, the Badgers went three and out, punting the ball right back. The Bearcats took over in good field position at the 40.
On first down..... Kenner found Chatmann for a gain of eight. Several plays later Kenner and Chatmann hooked up again this time for a gain of 13. The drive stalled however after that, and the Bearcats were forced to take another field goal of 45 yards to make the score 7-6 with just under four minutes left in the quarter.
In the SECOND quarter, the Badgers had the ball and played a little trickery...... Bollinger threw a short lateral to Lee Evans..... Evans then tossed it back to Bollinger who gained 22 yards on the play. The drive continued to move down field, but eventually stalled and the Badgers settled for a 30 yard field goal by Pisetsky to make it 10-6 with just over 11 minutes left in the half.
On the next drive..... Cincinnati started slow, then Kenner got on-track firing two straight passes for first downs, including still another to Chatmann. Kenner continued to dismantle the Badger defense as he guided the Bearcats down field. The drive was successfully capped off when Kenner fired a pass to LaDarius Vann which beat the Badger defenders for a 13 yard touchdown. The drive totaled 80 yards in nine plays. The extra point was kicked from 35 yards away, as the Bearcats were penalized for excessive celebrating by Vann, still the Bercats reclaimed the lead at 13-10.
The two teams defenses took control of the game for the remainder of the half. The Badgers had the ball for the final possession of the half, and staged a threat, but it was stoppped when the Bearcats SACKED Bollinger for a 13 yard loss to end the half. The teams went to the locker rooms with the Bearcats feeling good about another possible upset of the Badgers leading 13-10.
The Badgers started the THIRD quarter, much like the first. Faulkner gained 18 yards on the first play, bt unfortunatly that was it, and the Badgers punted, after Bollinger was sacked. Basically it became a defensive battle for the remainder of the quarter, the most excitement was a Badger interception by Jason Doering late in the quarter.
In the FOURTH quarter, the Badgers would come back and tie the game at 13-13 with a 40 yard field goal by Pisetsky. The Bearcats stormed back on their next drive. Kenner threw a 51 yard pass to Ray Jackson who beat all the Badger defenders and was WIDE OPEN for the touchdown. The extra point attempt was missed, but the Bearcats had a 19-13 lead with 9:25 left.
The Badger offense continued to sputter and it appeared the Bearcats would upset the Badger's again. The Bearcats were happy to trade field position with punts for most of the quarter. Late in the game..... the Bearcats still were leading 19-13 and were forced to punt from their five yard line. They intentionally snapped the ball out of th endzone for a safety to make it 19-15. They then kicked off to the Badgers, who took over at the 40 with 2:50 remaining and ZERO time-outs. Bollinger proceeded to direct a GREAT drive. Aided by some costly Bearcat penalties, the Badger's traveled the sixty yards in ten plays and scored as Bollinger scored on a one yard keeper. With the extra point, the Badger's led 22-19 with just 23 seconds left. But Kenner wasn't done. He thew three consecutive passes to Chatmann and got them down to the thirty. As time ran out in regulation.... Mammarelli booted a 46 yarder to tie the game at 22-22 and send it into OVERTIME.
In the OVERTIME....... The Badgers won the toss and took defense. Starting at the 25, Kenner almost scored a touchdown on a pass, but after a delay of game penalty, and a couple of broken up intended passes, the Bearcats setteled for a 20 yard field goal to make it 25,-22.
The Badgers came out for their First offense. On First down Faulkner gained nine yards down to the 16. Then on second and one, Faulkner busted out big from the line, eluded one tackler, and dashed in to the endzone for the TOUCHDOWN and a 28-25 WIN!!!!!!!!
With the victory, the BADGERS are now 3-0.
Next week...... Big Ten opener against Northwestern.
