Game MVP: UNLV= Defensive player Jamall Bremmer- two interceptions-two sacks
On a rain soaked damp day at Camp Randall Stadium the Wisconsin Badgers played much like the weather, VERY DREARY. The Badgers turned the ball over FIVE time, three fumbles and two interceptions. The offensive line line also played miserable as they gave up EIGHT quarterback sacks. In the second half alone, UNLV recorded five of the eight total.
To make matters worse, the Badgers played the majority of the game without Anthony Davis. On just his second carry of the game, Davis injured his leg after gaining ten yards. He hobbled off the field on his own, and was later escorted to the locker room, and then to a hospital, while wearing a special boot. His status for next week against North Carolina is Very questionable. Without Davis in the game, and with Jim Sorgi getting little if no time to pass, the Badger offense went into shut dowm mode. UNLV did not let the 70,000+ crowd stun them, no...... instead they played their best game and stunned the Badgers with a 23-5 victory.
UNLV grabbed the leadat 3-0 early in the first quarter on a 26 yard field goal by Pfieffer. The Rebels did have a chance to score a touch down on the drive, as they had a first and goal at the 4. But the Badger defense turned them away and they settled for the three points. Later in the quarter, the Badgers would help UNLV extend their lead. Dwayne Smith fumbled the ball..... Jamall Brimmer scooped it up for UNLV and raced 56 yards for the touchdown. Pfieffer added the p.a.t. and it was 10-0.
On the first play of the second quarter, UNLV was forced to punt, DEEP in their territory. Alex Lewis beat his two defenders and BLOCKED the punt, the ball was not recovered on time and rolled out the back of the endzone for a safety, making the score 10-2. On the next series, after the free kick by UNLV, the Badger offense showed a small amount of life, but were not able to, despite having a first and goal at the 6. Campbell came in and kicked a 27 yard field goal to make the score 10-5. UNLV would have another answer, and score again before the half ended. On a thirdand goal from the six, Ervin Johnson caught a pass in the far right corner of the endzone, despite the ball being batted around. The p.a.t. was missed, but UNLV extended the lead to 16-5 as the first half ended.
In the third quarter, things did not get any better for the Badgers. Wisconsin started the half on offense, but Sorgi threw an interception. Brimmer returnd it 30 yards down to the 25 giving UNLV more momentum.
Eventually the running Rebels scored on an 8 yard pass and wth the p.a.t. extended their lead to 23-5.
The Badgers tried to stage a come back, but all hopes were washed away with the rain, on the final play of the third quarter, when Sorgi was SACKED for a 12 yard loss.
In the fourth, Sorgi was SACKED again two more times for losses of 7 and 9 yards. UNLV stayed one step ahead of Wisconsin all day. There was no scoring in the fourth, but for UNLV, there was no more needed, as the Running Rebels ran out of Camp Randall with a 23-5 victory.
With the loss, Wisconsin is now 2-1.
Next game: Saturday September 20 vs North Carolina.
