Badgers WIN 2003 Opener

Game MVP: Anthony Davis- 30 carries;167 yards=1 touchdown

The Badgers trailed 17-7 early in the third quarter Saturday and appeared possibly headed to an opening day loss, but then Jim Sorgi passed to Lee Evans for the touchdown and Anthony Davis got sronger and stronger and in the end, the Badgers captured a 24-17 victory.

West Virginia failed to move the ball on the game's opening drive, and were forced to punt. Todd James went into punt formation, and as he kicked, Todd James burst through and BLOCKED the punt, after a mad scramble Kareem Timbers recovered the ball in the endzoe for the touchdown. Campbell added the extra point, and the Badgers had an early 7-0 lead. West Virginai came back strong on the next drive. Adam Jones returned the ick from Campbell 81 yards to give the Montaineers a first down at the 19. The Mountaineers worked it down for a first and goal at the 3. The drive stalled and West Virginia settled for a 27 yard field goal to make the score 7-3. The Badger offense was unable to move the ball and punted back to West Virginia. The Mountainers closed out the first quarter with an impressive drive. On the drive, West Virginia converted all three f their third down conversions. Eventually, West Virginiia had a first down at the 10. On the next play quarterback Wison, swept off to the right, broke three tackles and scored the touchdown. With the p.a.t. West Virginia led 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Neither team was able to score in the second quarter.

West Virginia extended the lead to 17-7 in the third quarter, as Wilson scored from the two with jjust over 1 minute remaining.

The Badgers narrowed the gap to 17-10 later as Campbell kicked a 30 yard field goal.

In the fourth, the Badger defense forced West Virginia into a three and out series, Jim Leonard returned the punt to open the fourth quarter 31 yards down to the 17. Shortly after that, a few plays later, Sori on a third and twelve at the 21, passed down field to Lee Evans who caught the ball at the seven and then fought his way into the endzone for the score. Campbell added the extra point, and the game was tied at 17-17. Later in the quarter, Davis scored the game winning touchdown which he aided by a run of 22 yards. After the score, and with the Badgers leading 24-17, the Badger defense held their ground and shut down West Virginia.

Wisconsin is 1-0 on the season.
