Headline: Badgers Struggle to Victory Over Western Kentucky Offensive Player of the Game: Anthony Davis--- 19 carries; 89 yards; 2 TOUCHDOWNS Defensive Player of the Game: Wendell Bryant--- 5 Tackles-- 1 forced fumble
Originally on the Wisconsin Badgers 2001 season schedule, Saturday September 29, was supposed to be an off weekend. However, due to the terrorist attack on September 11.the game originally scheduled for September 15 was cancelled, and rescheduled for this date.
The Badgers went into the game, knowing full well that they would come away with a victory, unless total disaster struck them on the field. Basically, they went into the game, treating it like a glorified scrimmage.
Wisconsin scored early. Broooks Bollinger started the game. He took a very hard hit on the opening drive, and he never seemed to fully recover the remainder of the first half. After he failed to convert on a third and 12, the drive stalled and Mark Neuser came in to kick a 35 yard field goal to make it 3-0. Western Kentucky would battle back and tie the score before the end of the quarter. Initially, Wisconsin had stopped the Hilltoppers, and forced them to punt, however...the Badgers were called for holding, and after the punt, Western Kentucky had the ball at the Wisconsin 33. The Hilltoppers drove down field, but were stopped by the Badger defense on a third and five. They settled for a 29 field goal which tied the game at 3-3 with just under thirty seconds left in the opening quarter.
Early in the second quarter, the Badgers would extend their lead to 10-3 as Anthony Davis woud score the first of his two touchdowns on the day. Davis delivered big time, as he first burst through the line for a huge 18 yard gain on fourth and one and got the Badgers down to the 18. Next he ran it again behind a block from Chad Kunz for the 18 yard TOUCHDOWN. Later in the quarter....Davis would score his second touchdown of the day to further extend the lead to 17-3. It capped off a dominating drive of 86 yards in 11 plays taking up over five minutes. On the drive, back-up quarterback Jim Sorgi led the way by hitting Lee Evans for a gain of 21 yards which got the Badgers down to the one. Evans then plowed in for the score...... he initally fumbled, however the officials ruled he had crossed the goal-line and was down, BEFORE losing the ball. The Badger defense would hold Western Kentucky and get the ball back to Sorgi and the offense. Unfortunatly..... Sorgi would later throw and interception and give the Hillltoppers the ball at the 40 with just over two minutes left. The defense held strong again, forcing the Hilltoppers to kick a 29 yard field goal on the last play of the half to make it 17-6.
The only scoring in the entire second half, occurred late in the third quarter. The Badgers were faced with a third and seven from the 33.Bollinger was back in, he threw a screen pass to Nick Davis, who out ran his defender down the right side untouched for the TOUCHDOWN. Neuser added the p.a.t. to make it 24-6.
With the victory the Badgers are now 3-2 overall. Wisconsin has won two straight, following two consecutive losses.
Next week, the Badgers will take their 3-2 overall and 1-0 Big Ten record into a home game against Indiana.
