Headline: Badgers Beat Marquette!!!!!! Game MVP: Kirk Penney--33 points
To say that things have gotten off to rough start for Bo Ryan in hhis first season as the Badgers head coach would be a bit of an understatement. However.... on Saturday, things started to look brighter, as the Badgers defeated their inter-state rivals from Milwaukee, MARQUETTE in very convincing fashion 86-73.
Kirk Penney started it off rolling from the start for Wisconsin, with a two and three point basket making it 5-0. Duane Wade for Marquette found himself with two fouls withing the first three minutes, and was forced to sit down. Devon Harris nailed a three for the Badgers to make it 8-2. Wilkonson a short while later, would connect on conecutive three point shots to make it 18-8 with 11:30 in the first half. Wisconsin, would go on a 14-2 run to expand the lead to 24-8 by the 10:00 mark. Marquette would later stage a rally of their own of 7-0 to cut the gap to 24-15. Following that however, Freddie Owens would hit a three, and Penney converted on a three point shot/ foul to expand the lead back out to fifteen points at 30-15. Penney would continue his dominate performance by nailing another three point shot, making it 33-15. The Badgers would explode the lead to twenty at 37-17, before Marquette closed out the first half on a 4-0 run to make it 37-21 at halftime.
In the second half, Penney picked up where he left off, hitting several shots and extending the lead to 41-23.
Wade returned and rallied Marquette with five straight points making it a 45-30 game. Marquette continued to rally back, getting as close as 47-35, before Penney hit another three to make it 50-35. Wade and Penney continued to trade baskets, and Marquette had the upper hand and momentum, as they got within one at 61-60 with 7:12 remaining. The Badgers then stormed back and regained control at 68-60. Marquette would fight, but after falling back 77-66 with 2:18 to play, the best they could do was to get to within seven at the FINAL buzzer 86-73.
