Bank One Badger Hockey Showdown: Saturday, December 27 The Wisconsin Badgers wasted little time on Saturday night in their attempt to regain the Pettit Cup. Only 1:05 into the contest, Badger Freshmen Kevin Granato (Yes... of the Granato Hockey Famed Family) popped in the games first goal to give the Badgers a 1-0 lead. A lead they would not give-up for the rest of the game. Later in the period Granato would score again, along with a goal by Steve Reinprecht and the Badgers had a comfortable 3-0 lead after the first twenty minutes. In the second period, Granato would score again. This gave him a hat trick for the game. Harvard would threaten a few times in the second and early third period. In the end, the Badgers scored an empty net goal as Harvard tried to tie the game. Down by a score 5-3, they pulled their goalie to gain the extra attacker, but the open net goal by the Badgers put the game out of reach at 6-3. The win improved the Badgers season record to 9-6. Harvard saw their record drop to 4-7-1. The win enabled the Badgers to advance to Sunday night's title game, for the first time since 1994, and play their former WCHA conference rival the Northern Michigan Wildcats... Earlier in the evening the Wildcats defeated the Boston College Eagles by the score of 3-2. This game was tight the entire way. The game was tied at 2 midway through the third period, when J.P. Vigier broke free at mid ice and beat Boston College goalie Scott Clemmenson one on one for the game winning goal. Bank One Badger Hockey Showdown: Saturday, December 28 Nobody said that reclaiming the Pettit cup would be an easy task for the Badgers this weekend. On Sunday night, the Badgers took the ice in their special tournament jerseys to do battle with the Northern Michigan Wildcats. A team they are very familiar with from Northern's years in the WCHA. The Badgers got off to a slow start...and it cost them. Northern Michigan scored the games first goal and went on to build a 3-1 lead into the second period. Just when it looked like the Badgers would fall victim to the Wildcats, an explosion of Badger goals occurred. The Badgers were trailing 3-1 and desperately tried to survive a five on three power play favoring Northern Michigan. Joe Bianchi rushed out of the penalty box and picked up the loose puck, a seconds later he shot and scored!!! That goal by Bianchi ignited both the Badgers and the crowd. The Badgers would score in total three straight goals. The last goal coming with only one second remaining in the second period by Rick Enrico. The Badgers would manage to hold off a series of rough shots on goal in the third period to get the victory 4-3. For the Badgers now at 10-6 on the season it was their first Showdown Championship since 1994. Earlier in the night Boston College and Harvard tied at 6 to 6 for consolation. |
